Personality:
Positive Trait: LOYALTY Dean is devastatingly loyal to those he loves - friends and family alike - and he tends to care far too much, often to his own detriment. His entire life has revolved around protecting his baby brother Sam, often at the cost of his own happiness or safety. From raising his brother practically alone (if John Winchester has no haters I'm 💀) to going to Hell by way of a demon deal to save Sam's life, Dean doesn’t hesitate to sacrifice himself if it means someone he loves gets to live. This loyalty extends to others who earn his respect, too - he'll fight and bleed for anyone he calls family. Dean wants to save the world and everyone he loves, even knowing it’s an impossible task, because not trying would mean betraying everything he stands for.


Negative Trait: Emotional Repression Since Dean has spent the vast majority of his life raising Sam, he's repressed his own emotions in order to remain a functional parent figure. He doesn’t like talking about his feelings/trauma, referring to vulnerability and softness as ‘chick-flick’ moments and tends to brush off very valid concerns as ‘no big deal’. The majority of Dean’s life has been spent hunting; learning to kill supernatural creatures, and of ugly, toxic masculinity defining his life-views from an early age. The Winchester men are manly men obviously; they shoot things and kill monsters and don’t have all those weepy womanly feelings. Dean generally hides many things he likes, because it’s ‘girly’ to enjoy soap operas, etc. He learned early on to bottle up that fear, grief, sadness, anything not macho and bury it under multiple layers of flannel, sarcasm, bravado, and booze. At his core, Dean is far more sensitive than he lets on, but he's terrified of what would happen if anyone really knew.


Negative Trait: Obedience Dean was raised to be a soldier, not a son. Dean says in season 12 that he was never a child (to Mary, of all people), and from episode one that's made pretty clear. Under John Winchester’s strict, vengeance-driven parenting, Dean became the perfect right-hand man, Daddy's blunt little instrument. He was obedient, reliable, and he never questioned his father.

We see this evidenced in Dream a Little Dream of Me - Dean’s dream self is taunting him but it's brutally honest, reminding him of all of his self-loathing, that he has nothing outside of Sam, and that everything about Dean is just his father, from his car to his clothing (that jacket he always wears) to his taste in music.

He clearly idolized his father growing up and followed his orders without fail, even when they were cruel or unfair or utter bullshit. While Sam rebelled, Dean played the dutiful older brother, shouldering responsibilities far beyond his years and pushing his own wants aside. Deep down, he resents John for it. His resentment can surface in rare, explosive moments - but that conditioning runs deep. Even as an adult, Dean struggles to separate his own identity from what his father molded him to be - weapon, caretaker, protector.


Negative Trait: Reckless Self-Neglect Dean doesn’t value his life very much at all, and continually puts himself at risk. He thinks he's only of value when he's helping or saving someone else, when he can be useful in dire circumstances. When chided for his recklessness, he tends to play it off as either a joke, or if that doesn't really hold, he'll switch gears and drop the mask, just saying 'I’m tired, man.' When he admits that, says those words, he doesn’t just mean physically - he means emotionally, psychologically, spiritually, all of the above. He’s exhausted, but he keeps going, because he doesn’t believe he has the right to stop.

His unhealthy internalization of every negative thing that has happened to him since he was four culminates in unhealthy coping mechanisms (booze, meaningless sex, occasional drug use). Because of this, Dean blames himself for every bad thing that happens to and around him. In some way, shape, or form - it’s all his fault. He's pretty hollow inside, and he tries desperately to fill that void with sacrifice and all of his vices, but nothing can ever completely fill it. So, he keeps throwing himself into danger, convinced he’s poison anyway, and that it’s better he take the hit than anyone else.
